Ok, now that's a great question. So let’s start off with a very basic question, why did Rycote develop the Cyclone product range in the first place?
The fundamental reasoning behind the development of the Cyclone product range was to create a basket windshield system, that achieved "shall we say" equal to, or better wind reduction than that of a Modular windshield plus a Windjammer; but with the transparency of our Modular windshield system without using a Windjammer.
We achieved this and went beyond what we had hoped by changing the shape and in addition developing a new fabric 3D-Tex.
So why adjust the shape of the new Cyclone system?
The reason for the shape change in the Cyclone comes down to this choice of materials for the structure. Any time you put a mic in a chamber, there is a chance of hearing the room tone that the reflective surfaces create. So, the Cyclone moves away from flat or parallel surfaces, to reduce the impact of this room tone affect.
The structure of the windshield (underneath the 3D-Tex) is critical to the overall performance too. The openings on the basket are as open as possible to reduce reflective surfaces, and therefore improve transparency.
However, this being a Rycote product it is tough enough to withstand years of aggressive use in the field and of course light enough to hold on a pole all day on set!
Real-world testing on location.
Our customers are certainly involved with some amazing projects and use Rycote products out in the field every day.
We understand though that all the engineering expertise in the world wouldn’t mean a thing if the finished product couldn’t stand-up to the challenges of real-world location recording.
Cyclone prototypes were sent out to location sound professionals for testing, and we would like to extend our special thanks to all those professionals that put the Cyclone through the harshest test imaginable in the real world.
